It has already been two years in a row that an exhibition of pieces by the most prominent young painters of the figurative genre has taken place. This exhibition is a chance for the young talents to evaluate their own work and compete in experience with other artists, thus stimulating the development of talent and professional skills.
The object of creative investigation this year is ”Unbearable freedom”, and the common denominator, as usual – figurative painting, because it is exactly the human shape that speaks to the spectator most directly, it is the point of identification between the artist and his/her work, between a painting and the society.
What is my freedom? Is it the same when I am alone and when I am among others? And when I’m hungry, when I want new shoes or a new car? What are the factors that determine my freedom? My human essence? Do I always act in concordance with myself? Or maybe I yield to the dictation of reason, whims of desires or accidental situations? Am I aware of my choices? Or maybe my choices are determined by accidental acquaintances, bank loans, luxury goods and prejudices? And how is that with you? What is your freedom of choice? Jean-Paul Sartre says that the human capability of cognition allows justification of choices. Thanks to consciousness you can choose freedom or imaginary happiness and tell them apart. You can also shut your eyes and not see… for freedom is so unbearable.
This exhibition does not claim to represent some abstract big picture. It is a conscious choice of the curator, based in the conception of the exhibition, and it reflects the visual identity of the society, appearing in the works of the young artists like a mirror image.
Among the participants of the exhibition are young artists that have reached a certain creative stability and some very recent newcomers to the art community of Latvia.
