Urban Art event in Purvciems “Urban Poetry”

Project Title: Urban Art event in Purvciems – Urban Poetry

Venue: Mebelu Nams, Dzelzavas Street 72, and Totaldobze Arts Center, VEF territory, 214 Brīvības gatve

Contrary to many stereotypes, Purvciems environment and mythology are creative and appreciative to urban art ideas – the history of the district, the colourful diversity of people and rich layer of Soviet time mythology encourage to populate it and outplay the artistic potential of the environment. The White Night art events will focus around Purvciema urban heart – Mebelu Nams.
Urban Poetry is an art form, which’ s  source of inspiration and experience is the diversity of urban life and its creator’ s and performer’ s  (often – in one person) nerves of urban experience. Urban cultural event of Urban Poetry invites to feel poetry, photography, dance, music and film creators’ urban experience.

Urban Poetry at Purvciems – PUR4IK 4ever
At Purvciems’ urban heart – in the windows of Mebelu Nams – photo exhibition Purvciems Gallery of Fame, in which photographers Aija Bley, Epnere Ieva, Inga Kundzina and Ieva Sture provoke Purvciems inhabitants to see their environment as an artifact and themselves  – as cultural process participants. However, the Dance Anatomy crew performance Pur4iks dances will explore the Purvciems inhabitants’ relationship with the dance, but American poet (Van G. Garrett) and British poets (Aoife Mannix and Jacob Sam La Rose) will read the urban poetry at the footsteps of the Mebelu Nams.
Urban Poetry at the VEF territory – Poetry readings and Poetry slam
The poetry slam masters from Latvia (Aleksejs Gerasimovs and Eds), USA (Van G. Garrett) and Britain (Aoife Mannix and Jacob Sam La Rose) will recite their poetry, as well as the competition of poets or Poetry slam, on the topic – the city, will be held.

After slam, the urban sound and text connection will be demonstrated by [2]brothers[no]sisters.
On the previous evenings, on 8 and 9 September at 19:00, the author evenings about the urban environments’ footprint in poetry of London and Houston – the authors’ hometowns; will be held.

20:00 Dance performance Pur4iks dances – contemporary dance project The Dance Anatomy – Agnese Bordjukova, Elina Breice, Kristaps Celmalnieks, Sintija Silina, Monta Vandere
20:30 The opening of the photo exhibition Pur4iks Galley of Fame. Photos – Aija Bley, Ieva Epnere, Inga Kundzina, Ieva Sture, texts – Kristine Zelve
21:00 Poetry readings – slam poets from the United States (Van G. Garrett), Britain (Aoife Mannix and Jacob Sam La Rose) and Latvia (Alexejs Gerasimovs and Eds)
22:00 Movie night on the building firewalls of Mebelu Nams. In the programme – film magazines from the Latvia State Archive of Audiovisual Documents archives, fragments from Aika Karapetjan’s film The people there (studio Locomotive), and short films about the districts of Riga.

22:00 Poetry slam.

Urban Poetry curators are Kristine Zelve and Ieva Sture, the activities at the VEF territory are organized by Total Dobze. Urban Poetry is organized in collaboration with the British Council in Latvia and the embassy of the United States in Latvia.
